CDC Issues Alert, Treatment Recommendations in Response to Spread of Flu
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health alert regarding the season’s recent acceleration of the spread of influenza A(H3N2) and discussing recommendations for treating the virus.
Concerns generate from past observations which have shown this particular virus to be associated with more hospitalizations and deaths in patients age 65 and older as well as a trend showing the influenza vaccine effectiveness for this strain of the flu to be lower than usual. The alert details recommended protocol for the administration of antivirals which the CDC says can be beneficial in reducing the severity of illness and outcomes associated with infection.
