IHI.300The Institute for Healthcare Improvement has developed a new program designed to help hospitals shift their focus from treating pressure ulcers to preventing them. According to IHI, a truly intentional focus on the prevention of these injuries, which can cost approximately $43,000 each in additional treatment and length of stay, is essential if hospitals are going to curb rising incidences worldwide.

The program, Expedition: Preventing Pressure Ulcers, consists of six web-based sessions during which expert faculty will introduce simple strategies for utilizing proven tools and methods. The faculty also will provide coaching in the implementation of an effective system that will improve care and ultimately reduce harm and costs. In addition, participants will learn first-hand from healthcare providers who have experienced success in preventing pressure ulcers.

The program’s first session, Getting to Zero – Strategies for Success, is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22, 2014. While the program is not free, scholarships and discount rates are available for qualifying organizations.
